International Day of Families is a worldwide recognition of the importance of families, celebrated each year on May 15. This year’s theme, established by the United Nations, is “Working Toward a Better Future.”
This day is intended to raise awareness of the challenges facing families across the globe while recognizing the strength and resilience of family relationships. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our shared values as families worldwide, despite our geographic and cultural differences.
Looking for a fun and educational way to observe International Day of Families with your family? Here’s a suggestion:
Plan a movie night at home to watch a film about a family from a different culture. Use this as a springboard to talk about both the differences and similarities to your own family. How are the challenges faced different from yours? What characteristics of your own family did you recognize in the film? This activity is a great opportunity to teach children about different types of families, cultures, traditions, languages, and celebrations. It’s also a way to help children develop a greater appreciation for the kinds of challenges families around the world face. Below are articles with great “Family Movie Night” suggestions.
