Raising Resilient Children – Fostering Strength, Hope, and Optimism in Your Child

 In

Resilience is what all parents want for their children because it embraces the ability of the child to deal more effectively with stress and pressure, to cope with everyday challenges, to bounce back from disappointments, adversity, and trauma, to develop clear and realistic goals, to solve problems, to relate comfortably with others, and to treat oneself and others with respect. This book integrates the latest research with the authors’ clinical experience to show parents how to 1) identify and eliminate unintentionally negative parenting behaviors that undermine resilience and 2) substitute positive parenting behaviors that foster resilience. This book will define ten specific guideposts that the authors feel are key to fostering resilience.

Raising Resilient Children is an optimistic, strengths-based parenting guide. It focuses on ten main topic areas that include communication, empathy, responsibility, discipline, and celebrating our children for who they are. Although the ideas presented are not altogether new and earth-shattering, they aren’t necessarily obvious either.

This isn’t a “quick fix” strategies manual but is filled with lots of great, hands-on, practical, everyday suggestions for raising resilient, compassionate, confident children. Clinical psychologists Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein guide parents in shifting from the mindset that children need “fixing” to encouraging parents to recognize and build on child strengths.

For any parent reading this book, there will be those “I wish I’d known that when …” moments where you’ll reflect on seemingly obvious mistakes you’ve made in parenting. Fortunately, there’s a whole chapter on mistakes as invaluable learning experiences!

Raising Resilient Children offers parents thoughtful and insightful tools for providing children with needed boundaries and guidance, while still honoring who they are as individuals. Highly recommend.
