Finding My People: Joys and Challenges in Adoption and Reunion

July 31 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

This month at Activism in Adoption, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Maxine Bryant, who will share her perspectives on adoption as a domestic Black adoptee adopted by Black parents during a time when formal adoption in the Black community was rare. Alongside her personal story, Maxine also brings crucial insight into the history of adoption within Black families, providing perspective regarding how Black communities ‘take care of their own’. Part of the ups and downs of her story includes initiating a reunion through Ancestry.com and meeting, building, and sustaining relationships with her biological siblings.

While highlighting how Black adoptees experience adoption when adopted into a same-race family, Maxine offers meaningful insight into what it looks like to process and explore identity over many years and discusses how she has reached a place of healing and resilience despite her hardships.

This session is a critical listen for adoption professionals working with same-race adoptions; adoptive parents who want insight into how adult adoptees navigate loss and how they can help support them in their healing journey; biological families who want to learn more about the complexity of starting search and reunion and the emotions that might surface for an adoptee seeking reunion; and adoptees who want to learn more about how to navigate search and reunion, both practically in terms of starting and maintaining the process and emotionally, as well as setting boundaries and finding connection.
